What teachers actually need from a classroom timer

A good classroom timer has to be readable from the back row, start in one tap when the bell rings, and survive a substitute who has never seen your setup. It should not require student logins, roster sync, or a paid “school plan” just to show remaining minutes.

Three setups that cover most school days

  • Period clock (45:00). Open the classroom timer or Timer for Teachers, go fullscreen, and press Start at the bell. Sleep mode dims chrome so only the countdown stays visible. Prefer the dedicated 45 minute timer if you want a stable bookmark for every period.
  • Exam / test block (60:00). Use the exam timer or 60 minute timer on a proctor laptop or projector. Students only hear an alarm if they opened their own copy with sound on.
  • Stations & transitions (5–15 minutes). Queue a short preset while the main period runs, or bookmark the 5 minute timer for cleanup warnings. A visible countdown beats a shouted “two minutes.”

Fullscreen, display mode, and embeds

For a spare monitor or projector, fullscreen (or display mode) is usually enough. For a class website or LMS, copy an iframe from the embed builder—or use the ready recipes on Timer for Teachers (45:00 period, 60:00 exam, 5:00 transition). Timing stays in the visitor’s browser; you are not hosting a live stream of the clock.

Sharing with a substitute (or a co-teacher)

Send one link: the classroom timer, exam timer, or a share URL from the teacher pack. They land on the right length without hunting presets. No account to create, no password to reset mid-period. If you already use UTM-tagged teacher links, keep them—analytics stay on your side when you share intentionally.

What not to do

  • Do not rely on a phone face-down on the desk—it is small, fragile, and full of distractions.
  • Do not invent dozens of custom duration URLs; stick to allowlisted pages ( 45 minute, classroom, exam) so search and bookmarks stay stable.
  • Do not put ads or popups near Start/Stop if you ever monetize—teachers will leave immediately.

Will the alarm ring on every student’s laptop?
Only devices that opened the page with sound on will hear it. Screen-sharing shows the digits; it does not automatically ring remote speakers unless tab audio is shared.
