    Free online timer

What is an online countdown timer?

An online timer counts down from a duration you set — ideal for focus blocks, workouts, cooking, exams, classrooms, and meetings. This free countdown keeps accurate time in a background tab, can alert you with sound and a browser notification when time is up, and works fullscreen without installing an app.

    1. 01

      Set a duration

Tap the time on the dial to set minutes and seconds (hours appear when needed). Or pick a preset or use Timer setup. Optionally name the timer and choose an alert sound. For a weekday, time of day, or custom datetime, open the Countdown pane — holiday landings live on Online Countdown.

    2. 02

      Start the countdown

Press Start or Space. Progress updates on a circular dial, and the face shows when the timer ends. Pause anytime, add +1 min, queue another timer, or go fullscreen / sleep for a distraction-free display. The tab title shows remaining time while you work elsewhere.

    3. 03

Hear the alert & keep going

When time is up, stop the alarm with one tap. Start the next queued timer, review local history, export CSV, or copy a shareable link. A refresh restores an in-progress countdown on this device.

Built for focus, workouts, classrooms, and everyday countdowns

Unlike a stopwatch that counts up, a timer counts down so you always know how much time remains. Tap the dial to set duration, use quick presets, queue the next timer while one is running, dim the display in sleep mode, and export your local history. Preferences and running sessions stay on your device — no account required. Need Christmas or New Year? Open Online Countdown.

    What you get

    • Presets & quick lengths Jump to common seconds, minutes, and hours, or named timers like study and classroom. The Countdown pane still offers weekdays, times of day, and a custom datetime — holiday countdowns are on the Online Countdown tool.
    • Background-tab accuracy Countdown uses deadline math so it stays correct when the browser throttles hidden tabs.
    • Sounds, notifications & wake lock Choose alert sounds and ring length, get a desktop notification when finished, and keep the screen awake while running.
    • Fullscreen & sleep mode Go fullscreen for a large dial display, or sleep to dim the whole page so only the countdown stays visible.
    • Up-next queue While a timer is running, tap presets to queue up to three countdowns and start the next when you are ready.
    • Embed widget Drop a compact countdown on your site with custom colors, size, skin, and default duration.

    Frequently asked questions

Setting the dial, presets, alerts, and embeds — quick answers.

    Is this online timer free?
Yes. The countdown timer is free to use in your browser — no install and no account required.
Does the timer keep running in a background tab?
Yes. Timing is based on a deadline timestamp, so it stays accurate even when the tab is throttled or hidden.
Can I add time while the countdown is running?
Yes. Tap +1 min (or press M) to extend the remaining time without stopping the timer.
What are fullscreen and sleep mode?
Fullscreen enlarges the dial and controls for classrooms or a second monitor. Sleep dims the whole page so only the countdown stays visible — tap to wake, or press S to toggle.
Will my timer survive a page refresh?
Yes. An in-progress or paused countdown is restored on this device after refresh. Completed timers are also kept in local history you can export as CSV.
Do I get a notification when time is up?
On first Start, the browser may ask for notification permission. If allowed, you get a desktop alert when the countdown finishes — even if you are in another tab. The tab title also shows remaining time while running.
How does the up-next queue work?
While a timer is running, tap a preset (or a duration in More timers) to add it to the queue — up to three. When time is up, use Start next on the alarm overlay to begin the following countdown.
Can I countdown to a holiday or a far-away date?
For holidays (Christmas, New Year, Halloween, and more) and long date targets, use Online Countdown — it shows live days, hours, minutes, and seconds with a shareable link. On this timer page, the Countdown pane still covers weekdays, times of day, and a custom datetime for shorter targets.
Can I embed the timer on my website?
Yes. Use the embed builder to copy an iframe snippet with your preferred size, colors, skin, and default duration. Timing runs in the visitor’s browser.
How do I set the timer duration?
Tap the big time on the dial to edit minutes and seconds — type or use the scroll wheel. Hours appear when the duration is an hour or more. Timer setup (hours/minutes/seconds) is the fallback, and presets or More timers jump to common lengths.
